Chapter One: Before The Storm

Jeff was sat in English, desperately trying to make the words on the board at the front make sense. It was no use. His head was hurting too much for anything to make much sense. Coughing miserably, he sank down in his chair and rested his forehead on his arms, feeling utterly awful. He’d been feeling rough for a couple weeks, but recently it had been getting worse. He knew he just had to ride it out though. He often got ill like this, but it had never been quite this bad before. It’s what he got for having a weakened immune system he supposed. He should’ve really taken the day off, Nick had tried to make him stay in bed, claiming Jeff had a fever but the blonde had ignored his best friend. He had exams that day, he couldn’t afford any time off.

~

Nick had noticed Jeff hadn’t been feeling or looking so hot recently. He’d kept telling Jeff to take it easy, rest more, or even stay in bed at the dorms; but Jeff was stubborn. Jeff always said Nick worried too much. It was true that Nick worried, but he did so with good enough reason.

He looked over at his best friend. They’d been sitting next to each other. They always say next to each other when they had class together (which were a majority of their classes). Nick tried to scribble down notes but his sick friend distracted him. “Jeff, maybe you ought to go back to the dorm… Or see the school nurse.” Nick whispered. “I’m sure they’d let you take your exams another day…”

~

Jeff lifted his head off of his arms long enough to look up at the brunette and roll his eyes. “Quit your worrying” he mumbled as he rested his head back down. “I just need to rest my head for a bit and then I’ll be fine” he tried to reassure Nick, but it didn’t sound convincing. He didn’t believe he would be, he’d had this headache all day and it was only getting worse. Coupled with a sore throat, blocked nose and cough, he was feeling fairly shocking. Maybe Nick was right, maybe he should go and rest. But he really didn’t want to miss his exams and take them another day. It was too much hassle.

Just then, the bell rang signalling the end of the lesson. He sat up again and packed all his books into his satchel, before standing up, his head dizzy. He tried to ignore it, but as soon as he tried to walk off it got too much and he sat back down again heavily. “You go on ahead” he said to Nick, screwing his face up in pain, willing the dizziness to pass. “I’ll catch up in a minute”

~

Nick sighed when Jeff had told him to stop worrying. The blonde was looking worse and worse with each passing moment. “You could also rest in your dorm, y’know…” He grumbled, more to himself than to Jeff. The blonde could be really stubborn is he wanted to be.

When the bell rang and Nick had gathered his things, he looked at Jeff expectantly. He watched as Jeff stood up and then back down. The other students were already beginning to file out of the classroom. “Jeff?” He asked, noticing his friend looked to be in much worse pain than earlier. Nick set his messenger bag back down on the desk. “Jeff, you look really bad… Maybe we should see the school nurse…” Nick suggested, praying that Jeff wouldn’t be stubborn this time around.

~

Jeff sighed. He really didn’t want to go to the school nurse, he just wanted to lie down in a dark room for several hours. But if it would shut Nick up… “Alright” he sighed heavily, massaging his temples. “I’ll go and see the school nurse if you’ll come with me and stop worrying” he told Nick. He stood up slowly, praying the dizzy spell would’ve passed. It had, and he nodded at Nick. ”Lets go then” he said as he walked off slowly. “I frigging hate doctors and nurses” he muttered, pushing open the heavy door to the classroom and starting off down the corridor towards the nurses room. “They just prod you and stick needles in you”

~

Nick followed Jeff closely. It looked like the blonde was about to fall any moment from fatigue and Nick felt he should be ready to catch Jeff if that were the case.

But for the time being Nick was satisfied that Jeff was willing to go and see the nurse. He chuckled lightly at Jeff’s comment about the needles. “Aw c’mon, doctors and nurses aren’t that bad. Besides, the school nurse doesn’t even use a needle.”

The two of them walked down the corridors together until they reached the nurses office.

~

Jeff looked at Nick as they walked down the corridors. “How would you know what she does and doesn’t do?” he asked, laughing slightly. “I swear down you like never get ill. Trust me. She uses needles. I know” he nodded, pulling his bag further up onto his shoulder.

Soon enough, the two boys had made it to the nurses office. Jeff looked at Nick again before pushing open the door and heading inside. He looked around the room. The nurse wasn’t there yet, so he just took a seat like he normally did. “Sit down Nicky. She’ll be here soon” he muttered, digging through his bag for his phone. “Can’t we just go back to the dorms?” he mock-whined. “I’m sure I’ll be fine”

~

Nick

"Yeah, well, I try to stay healthy… Guess some people are just lucky." He shrugged, entering the nurses office. He watched Jeff take a seat and decided it best to do as Jeff instructed. He sat down in a chair next to the blonde, holding his bag in his lap. "If the nurse says you’re okay then we can go back to the dorms. I’m sure you’re fine too; I’d just rather get a second opinion." Nick replied, watching Jeff going through his bag. "What’re you looking for?"

~

Jeff rolled his eyes again. “Yes mother” he muttered, pulling his phone out of his bag triumphantly. “This. I was looking for my phone. I was going to text Thad and ask him to let Mrs Cook know we won’t be in history” he shrugged slightly. “You know what the old bats like. If we don’t let her know, she’ll send out a search party” he quickly sent a text to Thad before shoving his phone back into his trouser pocket. He crossed his arms and slumped down. “You really need to stop worrying about me” he told Nick firmly. “You’ll only go and make yourself ill” he shrugged

~

Nick

"Hey, you said it yourself; I never get sick. Worrying about you isn’t going to make me ill. I take better care of myself than that, y’know." He replied. He thought about stopping by Mrs. Cook’s after this to pick up their history homework. "Does she know I’m with you? Did you text Thad that I was with you?" It occurred to Nick that he didn’t necessarily have a good reason for being at the nurses office other than to accompany a friend and keep him company.

~

Jeff nodded. “Yeah, I let Thad know you were here as well. I may have exaggerated a little, said there was no way I could’ve gotten here by myself, that you had to practically carry me. Otherwise she’d just wonder why I hadn’t come alone” he shrugged slightly. “Anyway, I’m not letting you go anywhere. We’ll see what the nurse is, and then we’re going back to our dorm and watching crappy movies for the rest of the day” he said decisively as the nurse walked in and greeted them both, asking Jeff what was wrong.

"Hey nurse. Oh you know me, pretty much the same as it is every time I’m in here" he laughed slightly. "Headache, sore throat and cough?" she confirmed and Jeff nodded. "This time with the added delights of a slight fever according to Nick, and a blocked nose and dizziness" he shrugged slightly.

The nurse nodded. “And how long have you been ill for?” she asked.

"Just over two weeks" Jeff told her.

Her facial expression immediately changed to one of concern. Jeff was never ill for this long. “Usually I’d just give you some medicine and send you to bed for a couple days, but this time I want to take a blood sample and send it off for analysis, make sure there’s nothing out of the ordinary going on”

Jeff nodded and held out his arm. “I told you she uses needles” he muttered in an aside to Nick as she took his blood. Soon enough the nurse had completed everything she’d wanted to do, taken his blood and blood pressure, taken his temperature and all the various other tests nurses did Jeff never took any notice of.

"We’ll have the results of your blood test hopefully later on this evening, I’m going to take them to the hospital now and get them to ring you when they’re done. I want them to know as soon as possible, to ensure you miss as little school as possible" she explained.

Jeff just nodded impatiently.

"Right, I think you and Mr Duval can go then. The hospital will probably ring you later, but until then I want you to go to bed and rest" she ordered sternly, glaring at Jeff. "Mr Duval, you will make sure he stays in bed, won’t you?" she almost pleaded with him.

Jeff sighed. “Goodbye nurse, thanks” he muttered, grabbing Nick’s arm as he stood up and dragging them both out of the nurses office and towards the dorms.

~

Nick

Everything seemed really routine to Jeff and it didn’t seem like things were that serious to him. It was true that Jeff was sick and should stay in bed, but Nick couldn’t help but worry and wonder why the nurse wanted to do those tests. Did she fear Jeff had an underlying sickness? He just had a weak immune system, right?

"Y-yeah, will do!" Nick called back to the nurse as Jeff dragged him off. They were planning on going back to their dorm anyway. Once they were out of the nurses office and walking back down the halls, toward the dorms, Nick looked at Jeff. "Are you feeling okay now? You look a little better than earlier in class."

~

Jeff nodded, looking at his best friend with a small smile. Nick worried so much about him, and he was grateful for it. It meant he cared and for that, Jeff would be eternally grateful. Even if he did get annoyed with just how much Nick worried. “Yeah, I feel a little better” he reassured his friend. “Those tests are just routine, don’t worry about it. Aside from taking my blood. She never does that but whatever” he shrugged. “I don’t usually stay ill for this long, and with my immune system as weak as it is it’s always better to be safe than sorry” he shrugged slightly, veering off into the kitchen in the dorms. He switched the kettle on and got down two mugs.

He looked back at Nick. “What do you want?” he asked as he added a tea bag into one of the mugs. Even with Jeff saying he was alright, Nick still couldn’t help but worry. When they entered the kitchen he sat down at the counter, watching Jeff work.

~

Nick

"Whatever; You know what I like." He answered. Jeff seemed okay now, busying himself with the kettle and making tea, but Nick couldn’t help but think back to how sick Jeff seemed earlier in the day or how much in pain he looked when they were in class. "I think we should go straight to bed after we have of a cup of tea… The nurse sounded pretty insistent on keeping you in bed." Nick mentioned. At least if Jeff were resting in bed, Nick would have less to worry about.

~

Jeff rolled his eyes and poured hot water from the kettle into both cups and stirred them. He picked up one and handed it to Nick before picking up the other. He cradled it in his hands. “Come on then worry guts, lets go to bed” he laughed slightly, his head pounding. He tried not to let Nick see how much it hurt, knowing the brunette would only worry more. He led the way out of the kitchen and up the stairs into their room and placed the mug on his bedside. He quickly stripped out of his uniform and into a pair of sweatpants and a baggy t-shirt. He climbed into bed and pulled the covers up. “Happy now?” he asked, adjusting his pillows. “Which film shall we watch?”

~

Nick took the mug from Jeff and followed him up to their room. He was satisfied that Jeff was finally going to bed; he noticed Jeff was beginning to look a little sick again. Nick set his things and the mug down, and took off his blazer and tie, hanging them up. He started to through their DVDs, trying to decide what was an appropriate movie to watch. He honestly would’ve liked it better if Jeff would go to sleep, but he figured resting was good enough. “Um… We’ve got a bunch of Disney movies. What about one of those?” He suggested, looking through the DVD cases.

~

Jeff nodded, snuggling down in bed further, clutching his old, battered stuffed penguin in one hand and mug of tea in the other. Now he was resting, he was beginning to realise just how tired and ill he felt. “Disney movies are good” he said sleepily. “Can we watch Beauty and the Beast?” he requested, finishing off his mug of tea and placing it back on the side. He shifted over and patted the bed beside him. “Come lie down with me Nick?” He requested, wanting the comfort and security of his best friend near him.

Nick

"Beauty and the Beast it is." Nick grinned, finding the appropriate DVD and placing it into the player. He pressed play and as the opening credits began to roll, he kicked off his shoes and grabbed his mug of tea, walking over to Jeff’s bed. He took a sip before setting the mug down and settling into the bed next to Jeff. He slung an arm around Jeff and sighed contentedly, getting comfortable. "You can go to sleep if you want, you know. It’s Beauty the Beast— we’ve seen it a hundred times so it’s not like you’d be missing anything new." He commented.

~

Jeff curled up against Nicks side, finding comfort in the familiar routine. The duo had spent many a weekend curled up in bed together watching movies and eating junk. It was one of their favourite things to do. “I might sleep in a minute” he yawned. “I’m kinda tired. And I know we’ve watched this movie many times, but it’s still my favourite and I don’t want to miss anything” he chuckled, beginning to sing along to the opening song.

~

Nick laughed lightly when Jeff mentioned it was his favourite movie. Of course he knew it was Jeff’s favourite. “You should sleep if you’re tired. We can always watch the rest when you wake up.” As Jeff sang along to the movie, Nick began singing along as well. He didn’t know all the words like Jeff did, but he managed. He smiled, thinking back to all the times they had done this together. He really enjoyed Jeff’s company and he was really glad that they were best friends and dormmates.

~

Jeff sighed contentedly as the song ended and the dialogue started. He snuggled up closer to Nick, his eyes drooping. He did hate feeling ill and crappy and just wanted to get on with his day, but it was nice just to curl up in bed with Nick and his penguin and watch Beauty and the Beast.

"One day I’d like to go and watch the musical version" he commented sleepily as his eyes shut. "I think it would be really good" his voice trailed off as he slipped off into sleep, penguin falling from his grip onto the floor.

~

Nick cuddled closer to Jeff and when the blonde finally drifted off to sleep, Nick smiled adoringly down at his friend. “I’ll take you one day, Jeff. To see the musical version.” he whispered, making the promise to himself. Jeff was fast asleep and Nick didn’t know if his friend could hear him, but he knew. He knew and it was promise he was going to keep even if Jeff didn’t know.

He watched the movie for a little while longer before carefully slipping out of the bed to turn off the DVD and then picked the stuffed penguin from the floor. He dusted it off before placing it back on the bed, next to Jeff. He didn’t want to risk waking Jeff up again by getting back into the bed, so he walked over to his own and laid down, closing his eyes to rest for a bit. He wasn’t necessarily tired, but he figured a little rest never hurt anyone.
